2nd class Wonderful April Work

We had a wonderful month in April in 2nd class

We have our new Ant Farm , which has been a delight to use and learn about with the children , they have really mastered observing our little classroom creatures in their habitat. We have been learning all about them and how they work all together as a team and as a single organism , the children have also been creating their own ant models out of egg boxes and paint and we have created our own ant hills out of clay , the children’s constructions were incredible with different details carefully placed into each one.

We have created these aspects of the natural world whilst learning about the different species of ants across the world and their life cycles and survival techniques. We are all taking turns to feed the ants and to make sure that their habitat is kept clean and healthy for the growth and development of the colony.

This month we began a new topic in Mathematics we were learning about “Capacity” and how every object that can contain liquid has a certain amount that it can hold securely. We learned about thetools and language involved in measurement , and we were individually , comparing and contrasting different containers , their mass, and different amounts of liquid.

The children all had a turn to come up to the measurement table and to figure out each capacity challenge. This task kept the students wonderfully engaged and it was a great exercise for their finer dexterity and pouring skills as well as their problem solving and estimation skills.

We are getting closer to First Holy Communion and the children are working hard every day on their songs for the alter! The boys are dedicated to this work and it is lovely to observe you will do yourselves so proud on the 21st of May.

We were learning about Seed Germination this month and what a plant needs to grow and how a seed develops into a seedling and then a sprout we planted our poppy seeds this month in the classroom , everyone was so attentive by making sure that their own seeds were warm and cosy and buried under lots of nutritious soil and we are making sure our plants are well watered , with plenty of light and have oxygen for growth.

Well done second class ! I am so happy to report that we have seedlings that have sprouted and it is all thanks to your gardening skills that you have harnessed.

Congratulations to both Robert and Michael who won the writing competition entitled the “ Mysterious Deep”— it was a credit to you, your work was excellently put together and beautifully illustrated.

Thank you for helping me with our Ant Farm - it is so lovely to be able to care for the smaller creatures of the earth, as they are just as important.

I can’t wait for more projects over this month !

Warmest wishes,

Ms Brady
