Spring In 1st Class

During March, 1st Class have been as busy as bees concentrating on their school lessons. During the month they paid a visit to Father Kevin’s mass in St. Patrick’s Church with the whole school. They also enjoyed Lá Glas, dressing up in green and taking part in the Saint Patrick’s Day parade around Monkstown with the rest of the school. After the parade the boys enjoyed the lovely treats from the parents committee. Later on that day, they all made cards and prepared a small vase of flowers and a video message for their Mum’s for Mother’s Day.

On another sunny spring day, Mr Fayne and the other teachers took all the pupils to the forest to learn about the trees in our locality and to celebrate National Tree Day. We are so lucky to have such a beautiful forest on our doorstep.

Congratulations to Alex who celebrated his birthday. Thank you Alex for the delicious cupcakes you brought in for everyone in 1st Class and the teachers.

Well done to Daniel Ortega who was a winner in the ‘6 Nations Fantasy Rugby Tournament’. Daniel received a new water bottle and points for his house team from Mr Flood and Mr Fayne.

The last few days of March were spent learning all about Holy Week and getting our Easter bonnets ready for the competition on the last day of term. When that day came, we received more delicious treats from the parents committee and our craft chicks even laid Easter eggs for everyone in 1stclass!!! Congratulations to Jack and Daniel Ortega who were the winners of the Easter Bonnet Competition. The Easter parade was rained off, so we spent the afternoon painting and studying the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. A great way to end the term.

After the Easter holidays, a new boy called Spenser joined 1stClass. He is settling in to life in MPJS very well.

Term three began with a walk to Dunlaoghaire library to take part in a Pixel Workshop for 1st Class, Junior and Senior Infants. We learned all about how pixels work on a computer screen. The teacher at the library showed everyone how to draw a pixel cactus. After that we all said goodbye and thank you to the librarian. We had a quick run around the park, then headed back to school for lunch.

In Science news, 1st Class has been looking into what effect sunlight has on a sunflower. We have also started to grow cherry tomatoes on the windowsill in the classroom. The class has enjoyed being out and about the school grounds studying dandelion flowers and their seeds.

It has been a busy spring and now we look forward to the sunny summer.
